Dental Habits that build Good Dental Health

dental habits, dental health, oral health

If poor dental habits are contributing to poor dental health, it’s time to take stock and make a change for the better.  Pay attention to your teeth with proper brushing, flossing and rinsing at specified times each day….times that are convenient for you and that fit your schedule.

Dedicate Time to Good Dental Habits

People often think that practicing good dental habits for dental hygiene can be time consuming.  It literally takes only minutes per day.  Dedicating time to good dental habits will reward you with good dental health.  Brush your teeth at least twice daily for a minimum of two minutes each brushing.  Floss your teeth after each meal.  If you consume snacks, healthy of course, flossing afterwards is also recommended.

Of course, if you are practicing poor eating habits, the few minutes daily to care for your teeth won’t reverse the damage done by a poorly planned diet and lack of good dental hygiene.

Let’s clarify.  If you have a daily consumption of sugared beverages and acidic foods you will eventually deteriorate the health of your teeth and gums.  Soda and sport drinks are packed with sugar and acid.  Eggs, meat products, fish and dairy products are low in alkaline and are acid producing, thus allowing acid to over ride the healthy balance of the two; alkaline and acid.

In addition to good dental habits, balance off your diet with alkaline producing foods that are fruits, green vegetables, beans, lentils, spices and nuts.  Try to make these foods 60% of your diet while balancing your acidic foods at 40%.

Combine thoughtful meal planning with twice daily brushing, flossing after meals and mouth rinsing and you are sure to create a healthy environment for your teeth.  In return, your teeth and gums will stay healthy and reward you with years of beautiful, healthy smiles.

It’s never too late for Good Dental Habits

If you have serious dental problems, you can reverse your dental health with regular cleanings with your dental hygienist.  If your gums are infected or your jaw bone is deteriorating, your dentist will create a plan to recreate your dental health through various dental health options.  If you’ve lost teeth as a result of poor dental habits, you can have your teeth replaced with dental implants or implant dentures; depending on the severity of tooth loss.
