Preparedness for Dental Emergencies Can Save Your Teeth

There are important steps to follow in dental emergencies depending on the specifics of the dental emergency.

First you should find out if your dentist has a telephone number for emergency care. If your dentist does not offer emergency care, he or she will commonly have an associate whom you can contact for dental emergency.

Best Emergency Practices for Dental Emergencies

For a tooth that is knocked out, do the following:

  • Find the tooth.
  • Do NOT attempt to immediately push the tooth back into the tooth socket.
  • Gently rinse, DO NOT SCRUB, the tooth and place it safely between the cheek and gum to maintain its environment.
  • Hold a clean cloth on injured gum.
  • For best possible result, get emergency treatment in 30 minutes or less.

For a tooth pushed out of position, do the following:

  • Gently and with extreme care, place the tooth back into position.
  • Once in place, do not force the tooth back into the socket.
  • Hold the tooth in place with a clean cloth.
  • If the gum is swollen, apply a cold compress.
  • Call for emergency dental service.

For a tooth that has cracked or broken:

  • Same steps as for a tooth pushed out of place.

Causes of Dental Emergencies

The causes of dental emergencies vary greatly.  Most common causes are sports injuries, injuries incurred with falls, or just the simple playing with children or dogs who jump up unexpectedly into your mouth.

If you experience broken teeth, teeth falling out or cracking as a normal occurrence, this is a strong indication of poor dental health and is an emergency of greater magnitude.

In the case of these happenings on a more regular basis, outside of emergency accidental conditions, you must call your dentist to begin professional dental treatment as soon as possible.
